Car Care Tips for the Winter Driving Season

With fall in full swing, the cold depths of winter will soon bring frigid temperatures and unsafe driving conditions. While professional auto repair Mountlake Terrace WA, may become necessary after skidding on ice and colliding with an object, motorists can take the proactive approach and properly maintain and ready their vehicle for winter driving conditions. Here are a few of the most essential car maintenance tasks for the colder months of the year.

Keep Windshield Wipers Protected

Cars left vulnerable to the elements require adequate windshield wiper protection. Raising wipers before a cold snap or winter weather helps prevent them from sticking to the windshield, which can lead to avoidable damage. Further, drivers should use a proper scraper to clear windows and windshields of ice and snow. Doing so helps protect wipers from unnecessary damage and premature replacement.

Consider Switching to Winter Tires

Drivers who live in areas that receive a lot of snowfall during the winter may want to install winter tires on their vehicle. Specially designed tires help cars retain their grip on the road and avoid skidding on ice and snow, helping to keep motorists and roads safe.

Always Drive With the Gas Tank Half Full

Inclement winter weather may leave drivers and their passengers stranded or force them to take a detour around roads gripped by dangerous snowfall or ice. Keeping the gas tank at least half full at all times is a great idea in case drivers encounter an emergency that leaves them out in the middle of nowhere.

Check Tire Pressure

No matter the type of tires a vehicle has, drivers should get into the habit of checking their tire pressure every week. Too much pressure is just as dangerous as inadequate pressure, as both can wear down tires prematurely and lead to poor traction.

Cold weather takes its toll on cars. Tending to maintenance makes the winter driving season safer and more bearable.
