4 Fascinating Facts About Flying

Most people who fly are unaware of the many factors that go into making flying as enjoyable as it can be. From the aircraft hardware to the air traffic controllers who keep us all safe, here are four interesting facts about flying.

  1. Pilots Eat Different Meals

Just like passengers, pilots need nourishment during long flights. To prevent both pilots from becoming ill, airlines necessitate that the pilot and co-pilot each have a different meal. This provides insurance that in a rare case of food poisoning, there is one pilot who is still healthy and able to perform their essential duties.

  1. Many People Fear Flying

While nobody likes long lines at security checkpoints and potential flight delays, many people have a genuine fear of flying, known as aviophobia. Despite air travel being extremely safe, being at a high altitude or not being in control of a situation is extremely stressful for some individuals. Therapy and medication can be helpful to manage this condition.

  1. Airports Vary Greatly In Size

The largest airport in the world is Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. Hartsfield sees on average around 260,000 passengers daily and is a connection hub for many flights from the United States to Europe, Asia and South America. On the other end of this spectrum is Dawson Community Airport in Montana, the smallest airport in the United States, serving just under 3,000 passengers per year.

  1. Most People Have Never Flown

Despite how frequently we see planes in the sky and how busy most airports are, it is estimated that only 5% of the world’s population has ever flown on an airplane. It is mainly a small number of people who fly regularly keeping planes in the sky.

The next time you step on a plane, think about these four interesting facts. Bon voyage!
