Being a photographer is more than just mastering your camera setting or owning fancy gear. It is not about making that pretty camera go click-flash. It is all about creativity. If you are to win photo competitions, creativity is the mother and father of your production. Whatever you present to the judges, must be totally out of the box. But really what does this even mean? How much more creative can you be? Here are some things you can work with.

Play with the negative spaces

In every photography, there is always the tag-of-war between positive and negative spaces. The human eye is trained to focus on the positive spaces. So, it follows that most photographers think in terms of positive spaces when deciding to compose an image. The subject usually represents the positive space and is largely the largest part of the photo. The background rarely is the first piece of information that you will consider when looking at a photo. However, it is still an integral part of your photo. Play with that space – the negative space- to achieve different effects for your free photo contests submissions.

Using colors artistically

Look around you and imagine this world without any color. The psychology of colors is complex, however, basic understanding of color theory can influence the tone and style of the images you create for free photo contests.  Some photographers like to make distinctive color adjustments postproduction while others like to get the color right at the scene. Understanding how different colors evolve in the various color spectrums allows you a lot more creative control over your images.

Your point of view

Your point of view is all that matters so take advantage of it. Try out different angles. Play around with lighting. If the subject can move or can be moved, then it will be a plus for you. Arial photos especially now that drones are more accessible are becoming a common sight in photo competitions. It could be something that you find yourself thriving in.

However, you need to know the rules and regulations relating to some of these technologies before you use them. Do not go flying drones over the White House, you might get yourself imprisoned. Bottom line remains that, your point of view is what matters and if you area able to get people to see this point of view, you will be good to go.
